But My Daughter Married A Black Man!
Tory MP resigns over racist remark.
Keith Myers-Hewitt has this week resigned from the Conservative group on Suffolk County Council following an adjudication panel hearing where it was found he had used a racist expression:
During a visit to Stowmarket library in July last year, Mr Myers-Hewitt, who is in his 70s, was reported to have glanced towards two AfroCaribbean men and an Asian couple using the computers, and said: 'Have aliens landed or is it an invasion of darkies? I suppose they are e-mailing their friends.'
Mr Myers-Hewitt was advised by the conservative group to keep quiet and hopefully the issue would die down. It didn't and though he denies making the remarks and claims he was misheard, Mr Myers-Hewitt has resigned.
'I know about racism,' says Mr Myers-Hewitt. 'My daughter got married 25 years ago to a chap from Jamaica. My grandchildren were subject to racist taunts at school and I had to walk them to school because they were too frightened to go on their own.'
Mr Myers-Hewitt says he is now going to sit as a completely independent councillor - 'but I'm still a member of the Conservative Party. I've always been a true blue' he said.'
Funny how Mr Myers-Hewitt doesn't refer to the chap from Jamaica as his son-in-law.
